Snapchat, with 375 million daily users.
But where exactly did that logo come from? Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel solved the mystery.

The Ghost Icon

The most prominent part of the Snapchat logo is the ghost, which was actually designed by Spiegel himself.
He drew the simple ghost figure after being inspired by the name of the rapper Ghostface Killah, a member of the American hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.

Reportedly, Spiegel designed the ghost even before launching Snapchat’s predecessor, “Picaboo”, which was similar in concept to Snapchat—users would send photos that disappeared after being viewed.

Over the years, Snapchat’s ghost design has changed slightly. In the beginning, it had eyes and a tongue. Over time, the design became more minimal, eventually evolving into the logo we know today.

Why the Yellow Background?

As for the yellow background, Spiegel said he chose it because no other app at the time used that color in its logo.
Others have speculated that he chose yellow because it’s a bright, cheerful color, and the brightness of Snapchat’s yellow instantly draws attention to the logo.
