After gaining independence on November 28, 1960, Mauritania began establishing diplomatic relations with various countries.
Among the first nations with which Mauritania established diplomatic ties and opened diplomatic missions were:
United Kingdom: November 28, 1960
United States of America: November 28, 1960
Japan: November 29, 1960
France: December 6, 1960
Suleiman Ould Bab Ould Sheikh Sidiya was the first Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to Washington. He presented his credentials to U.S. President John F. Kennedy at the White House on May 16, 1961.
Mamadou Touré was the first Permanent Representative of Mauritania to the United Nations in New York, following the country’s admission to the international organization in 1961.
He later became Mauritania’s first Ambassador to London, where he presented his credentials to the Queen of Britain on March 15, 1962.
These early missions were the cornerstone of building Mauritania’s foreign relations as a newly independent state.
