- A recent study published on July 7, 2025, in the Annales de Cardiologie et d’Angéiologie journal revealed striking findings regarding the prevalence of acute heart failure in Mauritania:
Study Findings from the National Cardiology Center (January – May 2024)
A total of 307 patients with acute heart failure were admitted to the hospital during the study period.
The average age of the patients was approximately 59.8 years, with 64.8% being male.
Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor, present in 31.6% of cases.
Advanced heart failure (NYHA Class III and IV) represented 86.3% of the patients.
Atrial fibrillation was observed in 23.1% of cases, while anemia was present in 51.8%.
The average ejection fraction (EF) was 41.6%.
The most common presentation was acute decompensated heart failure from pre-existing chronic heart failure (about 38%).
Heart failure with reduced EF was found in 55.7% of patients, and 33.2% had coronary artery disease.
A quadruple therapy regimen (ACE inhibitors/ARBs + beta blockers + diuretics + aldosterone antagonists) was applied before hospital discharge.
The in-hospital mortality rate was approximately 5.5%.
